Tenant

A tenant is someone who pays rent for the place they live in or for the land or buildings that they use. In other words, a tenant is a person, business, or group that pays a specified and agreed rent to use the property owned by another person. 

There are various other terms used to define and describe a tenant. Those include:

• A dweller in or occupant of a specified place

• One who pays rent to use or occupy land, a building, or other property owned by another person

• Someone who rents land or property for their home or business.

• One who pays rent to temporarily occupy or possess someone else’s building or land under the terms of a rental agreement, lease agreement, or a similar document

• A person with the right to use the property for life (if agreed upon), with no ability to bestow the same to own heirs

As much as the landlord has responsibilities, the tenant also enjoys certain privileges and has responsibilities to fulfil.

The rights of the tenant include:

• Right to unfair eviction

• Right to fair rent

Responsibilities of tenants include:

• Paying the agreed rent promptly

• Keeping the property safe by locking doors and windows

• Taking good care and maintenance of the property

• Paying all utility bills like electricity, water, and sometimes council tax (if part of the agreement)

• Not subletting the property without the landlord’s explicit consent

• Making good for any damage caused by the tenant or anybody lawfully visiting or living there

• Generally adhering to the terms of the tenancy agreement
